Job description:

We’re looking for a Head of Project Management who can drive our project management team and processes forward, and tackle some of our largest and most exciting projects.

Your role will be to inspire, mentor and lead the project management team - ensuring that all our PMs are delivering projects on time and on budget - whilst leading the way in shaping and improving our project management methodology.  You’ll do this by:

  • Supporting and mentoring PMs (currently a team of 8)
  • Maintaining a positively critical eye on our processes
  • Proposing and implementing significant changes and enhancements to ensure continual improvement
  • Monitoring the success of the team to be able to identify the impact of changes
  • Being a leader within the company, supporting the leadership team, quick to put your hand up and take responsibility
  • Always thinking about the operational and commercial performance of the project management side of the business to ensure it is as effective as possible
  • Reporting directly to the senior management team

Project Management

The other side of your role will be to lead by example - managing larger and more complex digital projects, alongside our PMs and Senior PMs:

  • Successfully managing important, high value, complex projects with limited senior oversight, delivering them to time and budget every time
  • Managing the detail: tracking budgets and schedules, managing scope, creating project plans, monitoring ticket queues, identifying risk
  • Motivating and running successful, cross-disciplinary project teams, maintaining morale and getting the best out of all team members
  • Ensuring that freelancers are brought seamlessly into our project teams where necessary and fully supported throughout
  • Being responsible for, and ensuring the delivery of, the very highest quality products, that will delight our clients, make us proud, and be the award winners of the future
  • Running an effective QA process, ensuring that maintaining a high standard of work is a key consideration across all stages from estimate to launch
  • Looking after the ongoing client relationship providing support and advice to the client and developing the relationship and identifying further work opportunities wherever possible
  • Working with Account Directors to negotiate on contract terms, pricing, and possible variations during the course of a project. You’ll make a winning contribution to new business proposals and pitches

To be successful in this role, you’ll:

  • Have a track record for keeping on top of digital PM thinking and trends, reading widely around the subject, attending industry events and bringing in new ideas to the team
  • Have a proven ability to challenge current practices and methods, and recommend and implement improvements - you have a constant desire to share, build and learn from everything we do
  • Set the standard for project management across the company
  • Be keen to work with our new business team, support presales activity where required to ensure our proposals and pitches are aligned with our practices
  • Be perfectly comfortable representing our digital services to senior stakeholders (and you’ll probably be keen to talk about what we do at conferences and industry events)
  • Be able to see the big picture and navigate your way through the challenges it presents in order to effect positive change
  • Want to empower our PM team to work proactively, not reactively

Skills, experience, knowledge:

  • Minimum of five years experience project managing in a digital agency or digital team or equivalent.  You may also already have experience leading a team of PMs alongside your projects
  • Experience leading a team of PMs or leading the drive to improve the team, with a demonstrable focus on efficiency and process will be a big advantage
  • You know how to inspire your fellow PMs to go one step further
  • You’re a creative thinker and have plenty of experience in finding solutions when something isn’t working well
  • You have a high level of digital knowledge, you’re at ease with the technical details and comfortable with strategy as well
  • You have expert knowledge of project management methodologies (you’ll likely be experienced in several)
  • Demonstrable experience of managing large-scale projects and sizable budgets (show us the tools you’ve used)
  • Great written and verbal communication skills. You’ll know when to listen, too.
  • You’ll know how to capture and understand a client’s requirements and translate them into workable, exciting solutions
  • You’ll be confident managing your own and your team’s time effectively even when there are lots of competing demands
  • Line management experience is desirable, and you’ll definitely need good team management skills. You’ll run great meetings!

In return we'll offer:

  • An opportunity to work on some high profile projects for some fantastic organisations
  • A salary commensurate with experience
  • Performance related annual bonus
  • Conference allowance
  • Flexible working hours
  • 25 days annual leave
  • 5% pension contributions in an ethical pension fund
