The Micro:bit Educational Foundation is looking for a committed, flexible and collaborative full-stack engineer to lead the development, deployment and delivery of our systems and web presence at microbit.org.
This site is the first port of call for millions of students and teachers around the world who are learning about coding and technology using the BBC micro:bit. The role will require you to work with a range of languages and tools, weighted towards front-end work; we are looking for someone excited to lead a team efficiently delivering a site with minimal infrastructure.
Alongside the main website at microbit.org, you will lead a team developing our community portals, ecosystem and accessory listings, and work with upstream communities to enhance the micro:bit code editors. These sites have people developing their content, and this is a technical role doing predominantly front-end and deployment coding to make the publishing, organisation and presentation of content on the static site easier for non-technical users.
You will be joining a small organisation at an early stage, which means there is lots of scope to decide how we support teachers and students, define the services we provide and how they’re delivered, and shape the micro:bit experience.
The micro:bit draws on technology from our global partners, and you will be working closely with engineering teams inside Arm, Microsoft, MIT, Nominet and with the global Python Community to deliver innovative products that transform the way computing is taught around the world.
This is a full-time role in the Micro:bit Educational Foundation. We’re looking for someone to join the foundation and build our web enabled products over the long term, including hiring a team.
Team size: initially 1- you would report in to our CTO, and we plan for the person filling this role to hire other members as the foundation grows.
Location: This position is based in Oxford, UK, however a significant amount of flexible working is possible.
We’re looking for someone who is keen to learn, take on new challenges and is excited by working across a broad range of technologies.
We’re looking for someone who...
- Is entrepreneurial and works collaboratively to get things done and shipped.
- Works independently to a high technical standard.
- Is excited to learn new tools and approaches.
- Is diligent in delivering robust and maintainable solutions.
- Works well in an agile environment.
Much of the work for this person is on a new project with very little legacy to complicate the design process. There are some dependencies that must be interfaced with, but the nature of these interactions are to be defined by the project team.
Our plan is not to over specify the tech we use until we hire into this role - having someone with the right attitude, experience and approach is as important as the technologies involved.
